Enlightening in it devasting honesty.

With Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine and Syria in the current news, this book reminds that war is always shocking, no matter where it occurs. WW1, the so-called War to End War gobbled up men insatiably. The world was rearranged at its conclusion, with lines in the sand delineating new states out of ancient land-masses with romantic names, Mesopotamia becoming the pedestrian-sounding Iraq, set to fall into British hands, and Syria, with its ancient mother cities of Aleppo and Damascus awarded to the French. The latter is now in the grip of one of the world's most evil and cruel men, Bashar al Assad. British blood drenched the sands of Arabia and all points north, west, east and south of it, even to the shores of the Mediterranean. When we contemplate what is happening in what is now colonially called The Middle East, it underscores that plus ca change, toujours la meme chose.
